Everyone needs someone to watch their back from time to time. With Cowboy riding shotgun, Rafferty never has to worry about the bad guys sneaking up on him.
These two have known each other for a lot of years and although Rafferty often teases Cowboy about his likeness to James Coburn the truth is he’d rather ride alone than with anyone else.
Cowboy is the personification of Rafferty’s Rule Twenty-three, harboring no illusions about some mythical need to fight ‘fair’.
Then again, he’s never lost.
At the same time, he holds true to his own honor code where if he gives you his word, he’ll keep it. As he says with his trademark drawl in Wrong Place, Wrong Time, “If you want him to stay alive, he stays alive whether we like him or not.”
Just don’t cross him or hurt his friends though, or you could end up like more than one person has—spending eternity in a shallow grave in the Texas desert.
